Mexican practice Estudio Zero has completed Amplitude Coliving, a striking residential complex in the coastal neighbourhood of La Punta, Puerto Escondido. The building translates the physical properties of sound waves into a series of rhythmic, pink-toned concrete arches.

Context and Site Strategy
Located in Oaxaca’s rapidly evolving La Punta district, the project occupies a 315.5-square-metre plot. The neighbourhood is characterised by small-scale, independent construction, presenting both design opportunities and spatial constraints for contemporary architects working in the region.
Estudio Zero responded to this dense coastal context by developing a 390-square-metre structure that balances communal engagement with personal privacy. The building’s massing respects the pedestrian scale of the streetscape while establishing a distinct visual identity through its unconventional geometry.
Architectural Concept and Materiality
The defining architectural feature of the complex is its reliance on sound wave geometry. The architects translated acoustic frequencies into physical form, resulting in undulating facades and vaulted interior spaces that create a continuous dialogue between solid mass and open void.
Materially, the building is defined by pink-toned concrete, a choice that anchors the structure within its tropical environment while offering thermal mass benefits suited to the Oaxacan climate. The pigmented concrete requires minimal exterior maintenance, weathering naturally under coastal conditions.
Spatial Performance and Living Experience
Amplitude Coliving is designed to accommodate multiple households or shared living arrangements without compromising individual autonomy. The arched structural bays frame views of the surrounding vegetation and sky, ensuring that natural ventilation circulates freely through the living spaces.
Transition zones between private apartments and shared amenities are mediated by shaded corridors and courtyards. These semi-outdoor spaces mitigate ambient temperatures, reducing the reliance on mechanical cooling systems and enhancing the overall environmental performance of the building.
- Incorporate local climatic responses such as thermal mass concrete to reduce mechanical cooling needs.
- Use unconventional geometric concepts, like sound waves, to dictate spatial flow and structural rhythm.
- Balance shared amenities with private retreats in multi-residential and co-living asset designs.
- Select low-maintenance, pigmented exterior materials suited to harsh coastal environments.
- Integrate semi-outdoor transition zones to enhance natural ventilation and passive cooling.
The completion of architecturally distinct properties like Amplitude Coliving highlights the shifting investment landscape in Puerto Escondido. As La Punta transitions from a bohemian surf enclave into a sought-after destination for design-conscious travellers and remote professionals, high-architectural-value real estate commands premium yields. Properties featuring bespoke concrete engineering and sustainable passive cooling offer robust capital appreciation and strong short-term rental demand compared to conventional regional stock. Buyers entering this market should evaluate local zoning laws and the durability of exposed materials against marine humidity.
